This Morning in the Garden
Blurring the boundaries between indoors and outside
Previously, this small part of the garden by the side of the house was only grass, a tree, a few shrubs and hedging to the side and back - and it was a bit unloved.
Since the transformation, the distinction between inside and outdoors has been blurred. Sitting in the living room you can now not be quite certain where you are. The garden seems to be intent on coming into the house.
The transformation involved taking up grass to make the border in the foreground and wildflower mounds a little to the back. Planting is, much like elsewhere in the garden, a combination of deliberately placed plants - perennials, bulbs and ornamental grasses - grown from seed and self-sown wildflowers.
The white tufts towards the back are flowering Marguerites. They self-sow every year. We can never know in advance, where they will appear. These individuals have grown to the size of small shrubs.
Whilst the garden changes from day to day, the wildflowers ensure that it is never exactly the same from year to year. There is always something new to discover.
