The Lost Silence Of The Land

A story of resurrection

This series consists of 12 colour photographs, which I created in November 2011 during a visit to the area of my childhood in Austria. The fog on the day allowed me to resurrect in my mind the scenery, which I remember from when I was a child, and to make it appear real.

The photographs deal with the loss of rural landscapes to residential developments. Some of the areas that I remember as quiet, out-of-town countryside, where children could play, cycle, get up to innocent mischief and teenagers could exchange their first kisses, have been “developed” into areas with people, noises, traffic, … Much wildlife must have been killed or made homeless.

The photographs ask: what do we see when we look? Reality is not an absolute quantity. It is what we perceive it to be and it is transient. Nothing is real, everything is imagined.

Visiting the area of my childhood, this photo essay also deals with the passing of time and my own ageing.
