A Bespoke Photographic Study of Your Garden

Coming from an art/photography background, I am a passionate gardener myself. I know how to read a garden. I understand what I am photographing, I recognise how much it means to you and how deeply you treasure every individual plant. When you commission me to photograph the sanctity of your garden, I promise that I will treat your garden with sensitivity, patience and respect.

I am using the term ‘garden’ for your outdoor space, be it a garden, large or small, an estate or the grounds.

Our individual way of seeing, experiencing and interacting with the garden is perhaps the most important aspect in understanding gardens. How the garden reveals itself to us changes throughout the day. Everything is in constant flux. Every day is different, every hour is unique and something to be treasured.

The garden affects our mood. Gardeners value their time in the garden because no one moment will ever be repeated and no two moments are ever the same.

The Process

Before I pick up my camera I want to gain a good understanding of your garden. This means arranging a pre-session visit to familiarise myself with your space and consider where the light falls at different times of the day. I also like to find out how you relate to your garden; how it makes you feel and what it means to you.

Photographing gardens means creating photographs at the beginning and the end of the day. These are the times in the day when the light is most favourable. Depending on the size and complexity of your garden, my work may spread out over more than one day.

I work with natural light to communicate the atmosphere of your garden, that mysterious interaction between how we relate to our gardens and how our gardens affect our responses and passions.

Availability

The number of commissions that I accept each season is strictly limited. Every season has its own character and appeal. You, the owner, are the best expert to choose the perfect time.

For a more comprehensive record of your garden, it may be possible to spread the commission over a longer period of time to document different seasons.

I also love to work with designers to produce photographs that express their vision.

After My Visit

Attention to detail takes time. I dedicate several days following the photography to meticulous post-production work.

The conceived photographs are the foundation for interpretation, never alteration. The results are authentic photographs free from digital manipulation. The only adjustments I make post exposure are ones that would also occur in a traditional darkroom.

Your photographs will then be uploaded to a secure, private, password-protected page on my website for your exclusive viewing. Alternatively, I can arrange a personal viewing session. If you prefer your imagery to remain entirely offline, I can deliver your proofs on a memory drive.

Without a doubt, the most beautiful way of displaying photographs is as physical prints on a wall. Your prints are crafted individually in-house by myself to exhibition standard, using the finest archival quality photographic materials. Prints are signed by hand. Each print is an original.

An additional option, which I recommend, is a bespoke bound coffee table photobook of the very highest quality.

For screen viewing I can produce a tailored set of optimised digital files (strictly formatted for display, not suitable for printing).
